Push the sections back together so the upper piece directs water into the lower piece. This overlap matters. A reversed joint can catch water and leak even when it has been heavily sealed.
Secure the joint with two or three short, corrosion-resistant sheet-metal screws. Place screws around the sides rather than the front face when possible, keeping them clear of the main water path. Do not use screws that are so long they can block the inside of a narrow elbow.
Apply a quality exterior gutter sealant around the outside seam. Use a continuous, modest bead and smooth it with a gloved finger or applicator. More sealant is not always better. A thick, messy layer can trap debris, crack as it ages, and make a future repair harder.
Let the sealant cure according to its label before testing with water. If the connection is badly distorted, corroded, or repeatedly pulling apart, replacement is usually more dependable than adding more screws and sealant.
Repairing Small Holes and Cracks
Small pinholes can form in older metal downspouts, particularly near the bottom where standing water and debris collect. Clean and dry the area first. For a very small hole, exterior gutter sealant may provide a short-term repair.
For a larger hole, use a compatible metal patch with sealant behind it and fasteners around the perimeter. The patch should extend beyond the damaged area on all sides.
